Model Steam Traction Engines
And Other Models
Durham and North Yorkshire
Durham cut out.jpg
The Durham and North Yorkshire was my first serious model engineering project before this I had made two stationary steam engines and some fittings for model boats, I found the engine straightforward to build, I bought the gears, and the wheel tee rings are machined from thick wall pipe.

ENGINE DETAILS
Overall Length  30 3/4”                             Front Wheels 7” Diameter
Overall Width  14”                                      Hind Wheels 11” Diameter
Overall Height  22”                                     Working Pressure 85 psi
Boiler Diameter  5”                                    Two Speed Three Shaft
Cylinder Bore  1 1/4” x 2” Stroke           Flywheel 8” Diameter

I have done a lot of steaming and mileage with the engine it has always preformed well and is easy to handle.

My driving trolley is basically a plywood box on wheels
The padded seat lifts off so that I can fill the built in water tank I have two take off pipes with on off taps, one feeds the injector and the other tops up the engine tender when needed , the  foot rests on the trolley are removable when transporting.

The rubber tyres are on rolled steel bands, on the rear wheels the bands are fitted over the strakes, I fitted a stainless steel plate for the regulator to work on, I can get a better steam seal between the block and plate, and the regulator block doesn’t stick after a engine lay up, the tender is made in steel, but has a built in brass water tank, the ash pan is made from stainless steel, the rear axle is not fitted with springs but has solid spacers in place of the springs, I had seen engines that had the springs fitted and with the movement of the springing there was a lot of wear on the axle horn blocks
